SPINE FUSION

Serving Phoenix, AZ & Surrounding Areas

A spinal fusion is a procedure that involves permanently joining 2 or more vertebrae together into one solid bone. In spinal fusion surgery, extra bone is used to fill in the space between multiple vertebrae. When the healing process is complete, there is no longer any space between the two bones. This procedure is performed to relieve or treat various types of spinal disorders, such as spinal stenosis, herniated discs, degenerative disc disease, fractured vertebrae, scoliosis and more. While it can also decrease mobility between the treated vertebrae, it is often successful in treating spinal conditions that make movement painful.

“The entire experience from scheduling an appointment to walking out the door was fantastic. You really get the sense that this is a world class practice. They made me feel welcomed and did not rush through the visit. He, and his PA, answered all my questions and ensured I understood the prognosis and all possible directions of care moving forward. I’m very happy we came across SPS.”

Spine Fusion Surgery Recovery

What to expect following spinal fusion?

The recovery time following a spinal fusion surgery will vary depending on the complexity of the surgery and other factors. However, most people can return home about 2 to 4 days following the procedure. They can resume driving up to a couple of weeks after that, but only if patients are through taking their prescription opioid pain medications. Many people are able to resume their activities almost immediately.

Although a spinal fusion is commonly referred to as a procedure that involves the actual “fusing” of bones & vertebrae in the spine, this doesn’t happen during the surgical procedure but rather over time following the surgery. A bone graft or a substitute is placed in the target region to stimulate the growth between the adjacent vertebrae to form one bone. This is a process that takes 3-6 months. The new bone continues to grow and solidify for up to 18 months following the surgery.
